I tried adding

PasswordAuthentication  yes

to /etc/ssh/sshd_config

to .89.2 and it still does not work with either of my "broken" clients.

If you add a line to /etc/ssh/sshd_config that says:

PasswordAuthentication  yes

and run '/etc/rc.d/sshd restart' do your logon problems go away?
