With VMware, yeah, it's a timing issue. With the default timing clock, FreeBSD 6.x (incl. pfsense) VM's seem to advance about 1 second for every 2-3 seconds of real world and host system time. I've never seen a timing issue on physical hardware that wasn't solved by upgrading from a buggy BIOS revision (though I'm sure there's some cruddy hardware out there somewhere that has issues regardless).
