If you are running embedded version in a Compact Flash the system file is
FAT.

Nope.  Still ffs.

Probabilly is needed in some circumstances?

The only way to defrag a FreeBSD file system (and I've yet to need it)
is to backup the data and newfs it.  ffs is MUCH MUCH smarter than
FAT.
