You can also use ssh tunneling...that's what I use.  If you don't know how to 
do ssh tunneling then I recommend doing a web search to find out...extremely 
useful.

To access via the WAN port, simply open the port on the firewall rule for the 
WAN interface. Of course, if you wish to use HTTPS, you must also enable HTTPS 
on pfsense.
 
What I did was: instead of using the WAN IP address to connect to the 
webConfigurator, I enabled PPTP on pfsense and establish a PPTP session into 
pfsense. After establishing the PPTP tunnel, I use the LAN IP to connect to the 
webConfigurator.
