it’s a netgear GA311 (http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adapters/WiredAdapters/GA311.aspx) running as re0. once it negotiates to gigabit, its rock solid and barely flinches if I nail the interface with traffic. its only the 60 seconds after bootup where its negotiating the network speed is it inaccessible. after that its smooth sailing.

it’s a basic netgear 8 port gig switch, it doesn’t have an upgradeable firmware and I know my desktop negotiates gigabit as soon as its powered on, no lag. im thinking driver issue

with the NIC from your pfsense box though? It could be a flaky NIC too. And I wouldn't put much faith into anything on any unmanaged switch. What driver does the NIC use, out of curiosity?
