That's why the server.max-request-size directive for lighttpd may help - I found it after finding this (http://trac.lighttpd.net/trac/ticket/503) ticket that was closed as 'invalid'.
Looking at the secondary, I'm seeing the same "backend died" messages about 30 minutes after initialization, but they went away after about 7 minutes; no traffic stoppage this time, and no uploaded files. Now that's odd. FWIW - I don't know how it is in HEAD, but the DHCP leases status page doesn't scale well to 20k+ leases.
