Embedded images running on compact flash are not designed for the kinds of page writes that would be involved with most packages. This is to make the system as stable as possible. Once SSD becomes a standard I'm sure they'll take a look at that, but for now - the stability wouldn't be there.
As for your install get it up and running on another machine (doesn't matter about the interfaces - just get the LAN setup so you can turn on the console) Then when you swap the drive over it will detect the new interfaces upon boot and you can reassign them.
