When you enter your mainboard BIOS and is the CF card detected?
I have a 4gb and cf/ata converter plugged in my old PIII Dell and it works
without any issue, is your PC/Server an old one or maybe not so old?
Have you done this setup using physdiskwrite-0.5.1? Perhaps you are
installing using the embeded version which has to be accessed via
com1(serial).
Have formatted the CF card using fat? I couldn't see my CF card in the
first place, had to format it before I plugged into the converter.
In theory it has to work, but try using physdiskwrite from m0n0wall site in
order to write the pfSense-1.2-Embedded.img.gz version, there are detailed
directions on the pfsense wiki.

Cheers,
