Forgot to ask you...have you tried installing Pfsense on this PC/Server
using an ATA Hard drive?
you should test that, in order to agree there isn' any issue with your ATA
controller in FreeBSD
by the way,
the same embeded install directions goes for alix/soekeris devices, so if
you tested in a normal PC/Server it should work without any issue on the
embeded side.
