I think we're discussing the nature of the protocol over the PSTN line,
not the local link from your firewall/router to the adsl modem (router).

but your point is also useful, in that you must set both ends to
auto-negotiate or both ends to fixed speed and fixed duplex, otherwise
you'll end up with the auto end dropping to 10baseT half duplex.
