I've tested now with both, checksum offloading on and off (while
rebooting the machine between the changes). To be sure, I plugged a hub
in between and traced the network traffic there. The checksum errors
still occur, nevertheless checksum offloading is on or off. Also I've
changed the interfaces from em0 to bge0 (I've got two machines in a carp
environment, which have different network cards). Same behaviour.

Unfortunately this is a production system, so upgrading is no way at the
moment. Maybe someone out there who can approve my study?
