I'm using a pair of pfSense appliances in front of a multi-node web
cluster hosting around 300 web sites.  No problems.

Or are you wondering if a packet filter is an adequate level of
protection as opposed to some sort of layer 7 "deep packet inspection"
device?  In my opinion, yes.  It seems to me that most of what the
"web firewall" vendors are selling is snake oil.
