No. Think of it as you are trying to use one IP on two machines simultaneously. The same proxy ARP IP can belong to only one device on one network segment.

But with ucarp there is only one IP address with a single mac address. I
thought the intention is that it should show up as a single interface
(to the outside world).

So, proxy-arp and carp are completely different things. CARP IP indeed has one virtual mac-address which belongs to currently active node.
