There's really not much to it. Set the Protocol to Google Talk, enter 

your username (everything before the @), your domain (everything after 

the @, often gmail.com), and enter your password. Yes, it will change to 

XMPP automatically, that's normal.

 

Note that if you use two-factor authentication (where Google asks for a 

6 digit number from a random number generator) then you need to use an 

application-specific password, otherwise use your Google password.

 

Don't touch any Advanced or Proxy settings.
