Your Smoke Is Killing Me
The Jakarta Globe, Wednesday, January 28, 2009

While the Indonesian Council of Ulema, or MUI, decision over the weekend to
make it forbidden to smoke in public places, and for pregnant women and
children to smoke at all, seems like an OK ruling to me, enforcing it or
getting anybody to even listen to it will be a tall order in Indonesia—at least
from what I can gather as a foreigner living here.

What makes it such a tall order is that people here appear to feel smoking in
public places is their right.

But what really makes my head spin are the types of places that are included as
"public places." A few of my "I know I’m in Indonesia moments" center around
smoking. One that never ceases to amaze is when the elevator doors slide open
and reveal a guy smoking a kretek cigarette. Only in Indonesia.

If the MUI ruling can curb puffing in elevators, we all should support it.
