Let’s Have Some Real Car-Free Days The Jakarta Globe, Saturday, 25 April 2009
I would like to comment on the article "City Wants Less Cars, More Days," April 23, in the Jakarta Globe. I am a foreigner who has been living in Jakarta for a number of years and, quite honestly, the efforts of the local government to reduce air pollution by means of a very limited road closure are pathetic. The closure is applied only to a few main roads, while traffic on the secondary roads is still allowed. The closure is only applied for a very limited number of hours. The closure is applied initially only one day a month with a second closure now announced for a limited time and on a limited number of roads. I fully agree with Slamet Daryoni, the executive director of Walhi’s Jakarta office, that air pollution problems are not solved this way. In 1973, Europe was hit by an energy crisis resulting in car-free Sundays in many countries. Only emergency services (ambulances, fire department, police) were allowed to operate. The results were astonishing in relation to exhaust fumes and the environment. For the local government to decide to implement similar rules citywide would make a difference. Otherwise it will be useless and not worth the effort.
