Looking at the front page of the Jakarta Globe on Friday, it was pretty fascinating. Not because of the Golkar Party’s desperate maneuvering to hold on to a share of power (“Golkar’s Kalla Nod Sets Off Flurry of Talks,” April 24). Those guys just ran everything too long during Suharto’s time. They can’t face change. That one is so simple. But what else? Your picture of a stampede of people wanting to buy cheap diamonds at a shopping mall (“On the Rocks”) — now that was more what people really want and do. Golkar? Democrats? So what? Cheap jewels is where its at, man! Then you guys had Manohara (“?‘My Manohara is Irreplaceable,’ Mother Pleads”). Anybody wonder what real people are reading about? Yeah, the prince and his lady. Ha ha ha to politicians. People everywhere want money and drama. And Manohara’s plight is all about both. For all the promises they make, we know the politicians aren’t going to change our lives much. So give us drama and diamonds!
