Test-driven development (TDD) is a software development process that relies on the repetition of a very short development cycle: first the developer writes an (initially failing) automated test case that defines a desired improvement or new function, then produces the minimum amount of code to pass that test, and finally refactors the new code to acceptable standards. Kent Beck, who is credited with having developed or 'rediscovered' the technique, stated in 2003 that TDD encourages simple designs and inspires confidence. Acceptance Test-Driven Development (ATDD) is a development methodology based on communication between the business customers, the developers, and the testers.[1] ATDD encompasses many of the same practices as Specification by Example,[2][3] Behavior Driven Development (BDD),[4] Example-Driven Development (EDD),[5] and Story Test-Driven Development (SDD).[6] All these processes aid developers and testers in understanding the customers needs prior to implementation and allow customers to be able to converse in their own domain language.
