for me, it was partly the bandwidth (I had a tiny connection, back in
2007), but mostly the effort involved in maintaining the site. Oli is now
doing the server maintenance and Marc is doing the web-app maintenance.

I cant speak for York's bandwidth in terms of hosting the files directly
... but there would be effort involved in exposing the files for direct
download (that's a question for Oli and Marc)
