Fons no doubt has more to add, but one way to think about delay is this:

speed of sound at sea level = 340.29 m / s

therefore a 1ms delay is equivalent to moving the source ~34 cm. 0.5ms would be equivalent to 17 cm.

Different panning/decode methods will have different tolerances to misaligned speakers.
