I'm still very fond of the Wharfedale Diamond V's. Richard Lee is
rightly proud of this design which punches well above its weight and
age (early eighties design). Now I'm retired I'm trying to accumulate
a set myself to replace the ones I had to leave at the uni. So far
I've managed to acquire 8 via Gumtree and ebay. I'm really annoyed to
have missed a set of four a couple of weeks ago by thinking the end
date was a day later then it was - and they went for only 42 quid!

I have also found that JBL Control 1's, though really cheap - and
sounding it in mono or stereo - don't sound as bad (in fact, sound
pretty good) when reproducing Ambisonics if there's enough of them in
a rig. This was 16 in the case of the system we tried out in the uni a
couple of years ago where we noted this effect - we were also working
with Genelec 1029's at the time so we were able to compare them. I
don't really know why this should be - maybe just because they aren't
driven as hard, perhaps because defects somehow average out. I
certainly don't think it's specific to JBL's - maybe others could
comment on their experience, especially if they have had the chance to
work with both el cheapo speakers and professional quality ones.
