er.... so Yvan yes it makes sense and yes it would be super cool for sound
designers everywhere if that could happen. It would also be great if Nuendo
had a couple buses with vertical capability - like "8 cube" etc
in order to avoid further confusion: buses don't really need "vertical
capability". if nuendo can deal with arbitrary numbers of channels in
busses without making assumptions, then the user can just add an
appropriate panner. it is the panner that defines the capabilities of
the downstream bus and the meaning of every single channel in it.
an 8-cube could be used as a bus, but that's not ambisonic mixing. some
people have used the term "ambisonic-equivalent panning" for this - it
basically means that the panner uses ambisonics internally, but already
includes a decoder for a fixed speaker layout. this can be useful for
people who are not familiar in terms of thinking in b-format, but it's
generally wasteful and less flexible.
a better way to handle this usecase would be to have a panner that
includes height, a b-format bus, and an appropriate decoder afterwards.
this way, people who have a cube can use that, people who have 5.0
setups will hear the mix folded down to horizontal, people who have
stereo can listen to a uhj decode, and people who have 32 speakers in a
sphere around them can enjoy all of them, all from the same mix.
i.e. you can put more spatial detail into a mix than your customer might
be able to reproduce, but the mixdown will always make musical and
dramatical sense, without anything fundamally missing.
oh and augustine, do get some more coffee ;)
it's really amazing in how many directions a very simple and precise
question spins off in our beloved forum :-D
