the plugins are a bit weird in the way they are automated (last time i
looked, it was x/y coordinates of the panner position in the GUI), and
the way they model distance is not too useful, but they should get you
going.
The x/y panner faking a circular panner was the way of getting around the
tools that were offered by the programming environment, SonicBirth.
i see. it bit me when i tried to transplant automation from ardour to
another DAW using your plugins, and i found i had to do way more maths
than is good for me :)
As for the distance simulation, it's more of a tweak that serves my
stylistic needs (and, combined with a good reverb, it usually does the
trick, so I'm told).
oh, i'm sure it does, i hadn't meant to imply otherwise. it's just that
such panners tend to perpetrate two myths:
a) "my panner can get sources inside the speaker ring"
b) "my panner does physical modelling of distance"
and it takes a lot of time to dispel both of these beliefs among
students and colleagues...
i keep having these exchanges on IRC about how routing a signal to all
the speakers does not magically make a phantom source appear right in
the middle.
all the best,
jörn
