errm. Of course, if the building burns down, it will be a very

I'm afraid this is due to various logistical reasons. Better before

Sorry, but I did think this show would be interesting and relevant to
this list as an example of where Surround Sound is being used in a
live context in a commercial theatre, rather than an academic lab
(along with the various challenges that go with that). Apologies if
it isn't.

cheers

Hi Bruce...

I alrady wrote that I didn't want to insult anybody involved in this project/show.

errm. Of course, if the building burns down, it will be a very
different event!

Well, I just suggested that the tons of electronic equipment involved might burn through. "Can happen". In fact this happens quite often in this kind of events, but you should not be worried too much... O:-)

(

The audience will have a totally immersive, aural and
visual experience.
IF electronic_equipment = burnt

THEN GOTO epic_failure ...

This is a form of non-structured and bad programming style with which I grew up.)

The form of the announcement (which you didn't wrote, I was aware of this!) is too tech-centric, speaking of the 16-channel "super-surround" and the voices/instruments which are - maybe unfortunately! - still needed to achieve some great results.

"Presented in 16 channel ‘Super- Surround’ the music will be performed
live by Sigma 7"

And what is sigma 7?

As I mentioned, the system used
for the spatialisation is TiMax, not Ambisonics at all
(http://www.outboard.co.uk/pages/timax.htm)

This is some useful or < real > information, but certainly your's and not from the flyer...

Best,

Stefan

P.S.: "Sound in space" sounds like in "2001 - A Space (Sound) Odyssey"

An up-coming concert at Derby Theatre (UK) on 7th June should interest
this group. It's a live, 16-channel, TiMax driven surround concert.
It's the 3rd in the series, and promises to be a great show and
they'll be a Q and A session before the show if anyone wants any
insight into the technology and processes involved.

‘Rosetta’ is an original music suite inspired by the Europeans Space
Agency’s ‘Comet Chaser’ satellite as it attempts to meet up with and
investigate the 4.6 billion year-old comet; Churyumov-Gerasimenko

Sorry, I can't hold back... O:-)

How does music actually sound in space? Is it more like in "2001" (Loud
SILENCE!!!!), or like in "Star Wars"? (distant explosion sounds coming
closer and closer...)

The investigation of Churymov-Gerasimenko might help to clarify this
important question...

Presented in 16 channel ‘Super- Surround’ the music will be performed
live by Sigma 7, and will include live instruments, voices and
electronics.
Is 16-channel "Super-Surround" identical with TOA? The latter I do know, the
technical term "Super-Surround" I currently don't understand yet... (and how
to include the live instruments and voices? Into the mix? Electroacoustical
performance? Maybe these questions are not so important, because the
important thing here seems to be "super surround"...)

The audience will have a totally immersive, aural and
visual experience.

Well, if you say so... and what if the musicians have a bad day, or the
technical equiment will break or burn down? :-D :-[

Everybody keeps telling that things have to be < totally > < immersive >.
Hopefully this project/concert is not just about technique, but even about
some music (which might be involving or < immersive > per se, but maybe
doesn't matter so much in the context of this technological project.)

There will also be an opportunity before the show to meet some of the
team and to find out about the technology involved in putting together
a show of this complexity.

But why not after the show? Talking about the technique before even
listening to the results? But maybe it's only me who "has a bad feeling
about this".... (And would it be < allowed > to talk about the
musical/artistical results? Or should we sursound list guys stick to what we
know? But I see that you can't talk about the music and performance before
the concert, fair enough...)

You’re invited to lose yourself in sound and space!

Supported by The European Space Agency and Funded by the Arts Council."

Spatial sound = Sound in Space! (Once and for all.)

I don't want to mock anybody involved in this project, of course. However,
the style of the posted announcement doesn't look very much related to art
or music. Probably this was not the intention. But still...

Best,

Stefan
