I have experimented with playing back three
channel Mercury recording of Stravinsky's
Firebird (LSO/Dorati) from SACD using three
front loudpeakers and also played stereo using
three loudspeakers, matrixing level and phase of
the original channels as indicated in two of the
Gerzon papers (I forget which for the moment).
This is a classical spaced omni recording, I would imagine.
The Mercury recording was done with three spaced
omnis. But that technique doesnt sound bad with
good mics, as long as the positions are carefully
chosen and there are no spot mikes. I recently
recorded a concert where we put up three
M50-style omnis and my pantophonic mic. I
preferred the sound of my mic, but the three
omnis gave a respectable soundstage.
So, not some 5.1 recording you would recommend
for the (later) 5.1 ITU config. (And probably
they covered more than a "60º stage" anyway,
which could explain your observation from below.)
My other observations are with Blumlein fig 8
pair and otherwise recorded examples. What
sounds excellent and coherent in stereo sounds,
in my experience, even better with three
speakers. The greater solidity of the signal
from the centre speaker, although synthesized, reduces the stereo seat problem.
