Hi Karen,

I use CD-ROM drives in DOS. DOS comes with an extension
for it which you have to load in your autoexec.bat. The
other thing you need is the driver from the manufacturer
for that model. The whole software thingy looks something
like this:

  In autoexec.bat
        C:\DOS\MSCDEX /DRIVENAME-AND-OTHER-ARGUMENTS

  In config.sys
        DEVICE= C:\CDROM\MTMCDAI.SYS /SOMESTUFF

The mscdex comes with DOS, the device.sys (the above is an
example only) comes from the manufacturer or off the web.
That part is all pretty simple, but I figured if you know
how it was to be set up then you would feel more
comfortable getting into it.

Most of the newer ones are IDE and work off the IDE (hard
drive) controller. The older ones often work off some
other interface which would be either on a sound card or
seperate card. If you get a non ide, you MUST have some
sort of card which will work with that particular
interface. This fact makes many of the older (otherwise
perfectly good) drives useless because the card has been
lost.
If you are buying a new one, it will plug in like any
hard drive. Make sure you have space for it. What I mean
is, if you are running your hard drive off a seperate
controller card, then you can only have one hard drive or
you won't have room for the CD. If your HDD controller is
on the mother board, then you probably have two seperate
channels, and each one has room for 2 drives, so you'll be
ok.
To sum up. Don't worry about the software. No problems
there. Just make sure the CD can be plugged into your
system.

Cheers,
       Ole Juul
