Something is incorrect in the BIOS or the harddrive can be damaged.
I had the same problem with a secondhand driver I got from a friend (who
had gotten it from his father that works at Ericsson) the drive died after
only a few weeks of usage.
(A reformat gave me around 50% of the drive size so it had to go)
You might want to check out the BIOS setting for the drive, and try to
"autodetect harddrive" in the BIOS (probably up on the right side)
To get inside the BIOS you need to press some special key(s) (Delete is my
guess on your system)
If after fixing the BIOS the problem is still there you should try to make
a backup on everything that's on the drive.

And it isn't DOS that boots for 1 or 2 minutes. It's the BIOS that starts
and checks so everything is alright, after you have pressed F1 DOS starts
(not entirely true, the BIOS continues for a while afterwards).

Does this happen after you make a CTRL-ALT-DEL reboot?

i just thought of something, perhaps there can be some problem with
master/slave settings on the drive. Has this problem arisen after a
hardware change?
