I had an Amstrad that was in a house fire. Said system memory
failure. I assume the memory has died, or the motherboard. I had a
look at the motherboard and it didnt look like the memory was
easily replacable, I think it was soldered on. Sounds to me like the
Amstrads died too easily so probably not worth repairing if it's just
going to die again.
That's better than the repair shop can do I think...I'd say you were
right saying they didnt even look at it.
