Hello,

does anybody over here know how to switch and address a usual ide-hd into
8-bit mode. This question may keep many of you wondering but when we asked
QUANTUM for 8-bit compatibility of their hd-drives they responded that
_all_ of their drives are capable of the 8-bit mode specified in the ATA-2
documents.

The background of my request is as follows:
We succeeded in building a alternative DOS-driver for the par. zip-drive
of IOMEGA(a free demo can be downloaded under www.palmzip.de) which
supports all that nice oldies with 8088/86 cpu types up to the modern
pentium cpu(and much more).

Now we engage in building a driver to connect standard ide-hds to common
bi-directional par. ports of any kind of machine. A first driver soft
based on 16-bit access for the ATARI Portfolio(which is a DOS-machine) is
ready and can be downloaded for free from www.palmzip.de in the Portfolios
hardware corner. As this 16-bit driver requires some changend hardware we
would be eager to build a mere 8-bit version which minimizes external
hardware to probably a mere cable !!!!!
And this driver is planned to be not only for the ATARI Portfolio but for
any kind of a DOS-based computer with bi-directional port.

So, some experiences, docs, links, ideas how to switch and access into 8-
bit mode ?

Thanks to you all.
