Aparently HTTP protocol defines a "HEAD" requst which
could be used to check for valid URLs quicker than getting
the whole document.
  It's not for DOS, but issue 36 (April 1997) of the Linux
Journal has an article on how to do this using a Perl
script. The article contains a complete script listing.
Perhaps one of the programmers here can translate this
logic to DOS.
