One prog not mentioned yet among the many good hints here on the list
TELIX (DOS version: still supported, though new versions after 3.2x
were for Win$) - with perhaps the most complete scripting ability of
them all. With tha last DOS distribution came an ultra-easy to set up
host prog too, which is very reliable (we use is since years for
hassle-free direct file transfers, and now ever more often when the
net is clogged).

It's reasonably priced, the free shareware distribution (SimTel and
other good places) is fully functional; there's just one nag screen for
some seconds at the end, vanishing by itself.
