Well, I don't regularly post here, but I read this list since last Summer,
and I find this thread quite interesting.

Now let's talk the real subject. Or said that MS is a really big company.
So, it is as rich as big, or nearly, if you know what I mean. And Bill Gates
is, or is surrounded by, undoubted marketting genius, market studies of
undoubted accuracy, and some computer gurus. Or at least, if he isn't
surrounded by computer gurus, he surely has the money to buy them if he
needs. But let's see: if he can make a product with no or little skills
being paid, why should he waste big money on it? So let's instead turn this
product into a big money-maker, making it sell as much as you can. So that
he earns some money. So he has the money. The market discovers that he's
been lying, telling it was a big product and it wasn't that big. But hey,
now he's back, with another product, and this time he spent big money, and
there comes a real big product, really well done. Because he has the money,
he can buy people with skills. They can make something better, I bet. During
some time, until another guru comes up with another idea that is better than
Microsoft's and that is also free, Bill will again rule. Unfortunately, but
I think it's true. During that time, he will have established his product as
a standard, so it'll take time for people to discontinue use of the product
by Microsoft and start using another. In that time, he will be, of course,
developping something new, which will make people return to MS.

Besides, there are a few considerations I'd like to point out:

1. People don't think Microsoft is bad, 'Cos they don't know it. Even if you
tell them. People like the product or dislike. People change to another OS,
or word processor, or such if they like it and if it's being used widely.
Some big organizations must be willing to do better than MS and must make
people turn to them. Even then, people won't think MS had bad products, they
simply think product A or B to be better, and to better suite their needs.
MS can reverse that scenario, if Bill is willing to.

2. Here in Portugal, when you work to a stately-owned company or to a real
big company, once you get there, you don't care, you don't put all your
maximum efforts on your work, because you're already where you wanted to
arrive, or near. Of course there are some exceptions, but some of the MS
programmers might also think this way - I, for one, would not be surprised
if I found out that. So, if they fear their job to be in danger, they can
make better work.

OK, here's my $0.1 worth. It's not even $0.2! <G<

>Ofcourse, MS falling down is actually because of MS's fault for
>making bad products. Nobody but the company is there to blaim.

Right, but let's be realistic: it'll take some time for that to happen.
