The simpliest way to go is NS-LAN. It's simple, compact,
reliable and relatively easy to set up. Unfortunately it only
allows 2 computers on the network (the multi-computer version
costs big bucks). Still, the 2-computer version is ideal for
a home system.

The other option is DR-DOS (with Netware). This works fine:
more comprehensive than NS-LAN, but bulky and more complicated.

I initially set up an NS-LAN system and then switched to DR-DOS
(so that I could put a third computer on the network). Now I
have deleted DR-DOS and switched back to NS-LAN. I just can't
resist it: simple, small footprint, and it does exactly what I
want (except for the 2-computer limit). I still have 3 computers
on my net, but the two clients have the same node number - as long
as I don't boot the network on both at the same time, everything
is perfect.
