I use interserver which comes with MS-DOS 6.+. It takes
only one line in the config.sys of the client and the rest
is automatic. Your choice of parallel ports or serial.
Parallel is fast and serial is slow, but you can make a
serial cable up yourself without any trouble and even use
a piece of phone wire and make it really long if you want.
This only works between two boxes, but with a switch box
you can do more.
When I set up machines for others, I sometimes just put
"intersvr" as the last line in the autoexec.bat and then
connect them to my machine. That way I can load software
and work on their box without bothering with the keyboard
or monitor or any messy stuff like that.
Note: you have to use MS on both machines. <g>
