Just download the sources from a local Linux ftp site.
Currently there are two "newest" kernels
2.2.(5/6???) and 2.0.36 (.37 is about to be released).
2.2.x is newer, but requires a lot of upgrading. 2.0 is better for
you.

On Monkey Linux? This is a bit of overkill. Like running Windows 95 on top
of MS-DOS 1.0 . Consider upgrading to a "full" Linux. Slackware might be
right for you, 'cause it allows very minimalistic install. Installing
Slackware is probably also easier as upgrading libc libraries.

The PATH variable is set in multiple places.
check out ~/.bash_profile , ~/.bashrc , /etc/profile , /etc/bashrc
