X1 CDROM will suffice for your needs.
X1 CDROM usually comes with drivers that will work fine even on a 286!
Sometimes drivers for some X2 work as well on as low as a 286.
X1 or X2 will be too slow for most congruous multimedia needs, but, that
is not what you specified. Dictionary look-ups, database referencing,
etc..., all OK with X1 or X2.
