300 MHz is in the SurvPC slot nowdays - 400 is on the border! Ah well, a
486 with DOS is faster than a Pentium with W95 on all aspects so I assume
that my P166 will be usable for quite some time. And all my new games are
just NES/SNES games ;)

To the problem at hand, you will need to get the patch that ALL AMD CPUs
over some MHz needs (sorry can't rmember everything now can I?). If I
remember correctly you can either buy this from M$ (for like 20-30$) or get
it for free from AMD.
My advice would be to go to http://www.amd.com/ and search for the patch.

I don't know if AMD ever put M$ to the court for this, or for the behavior
with the patch that costed money.

And no, the problem only arises over some border (I think it was 300).
