I assume Windows 3.0 already works fine before you added MSDOS 6.22 ?
AFAIK Windows needs DOS and HIMEM.SYS to work properly. Probably your
(failed?) attempt to upgrade MSDOS broke something.

Make sure a virus-free MSDOS (ver. 5.0 or above) installed properly, and the
line DEVICE=<path>HIMEM.SYS present in your CONFIG.SYS file (replace
<path> with your MSDOS directoy). Run Scandisk to make sure your HDD is
Ok. Then reinstall Windows from the floppies.

How much memory you have on your 286? If Windows still crashed, probably
you'll need more memory. To be usable with larger applications than the
included accessories and games you'll need at least 2MB of RAM.

On a 286, Windows will only operate in standard mode. It can only run some
16-bit Windows applications -- usually older versions, some newer 16-bit apps
has 386-specific instructions mixed-in. Window will also crash if you try to run
16-bit apps that require too much memory.

BTW, this mail was written on a 80286-16 (3MB RAM/MSDOS 6.22/Win 3.1).
Welcome to the club! :-)
