My Mendocino 333 with Linux completes those baby's in about 13 hours
look at

for evidence. This is done at nice 19 (lowest priority), while
continuing using the computer. (including compiling stuff and coding
an occasional MP3).
Also take a look at

for stats between Operating Systems. More fair is
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stats/platforms.html
because it combines both hardware and OS's.
Comparing an Alpha running NT and an ix86 running Linux just isn't fair.
