I've not read most of the messages in this thread, but I assure you that
simple speech access (when handled properly) is more than adequate for
access to the computer. I don't like windows, because it's such a piece
of trash I'd be ashamed to put my name were I Bill Gates, however, I don't
like it for other reasons either, not the least of which is that it is soo
cumbersome to use with speech software. This is why I use dos and linux
as my operating systems, simple, to the point, and there's *nothing* I
can't do using one or the other of these systems. I've been using dos
since version 3.0 or so back in 1986, and all I can say is that it's
gotten progressively bloated with each successive release. New utilities
yes, but new bloat too. I am a programmer by trade and choice, and
there's nothing worse than seeing someone else waste their time producing
the junk and bloatware that is so happily accepted as mainstream standards
these days.
But anyway, all that aside, text based interfaces do quite well for my
purposes, and I suspect they'll continue to do so well into the future,
for s long as there are computers, there will be those of us who much
prefer the keystroke/commands that can be accomplished with a single press
of the keys to that combersome method of moving the pointer around, lining
it up just right, and clicking (sometimes on multiple items) to get the
job done. Given the same exact program, under the same exact knowledge
levels, a keyboard person can outperform the mouser every time if speed is
essential (in my experience at least)
