Duh.. I do not relate to programming stuff very often, so I forgot
that DJGPP is a 32-bit development tool. Had I remembered, instead
of assuming that the author preferred the MS C executables because he
considered MS C *better*, I would probably have assumed he preferred
it for compatibility reasons (ability to run on pre 386 machines).
But where I failed to consider DJGPP a 32-bit development
tool/compiler, Howard fails to consider the time factor. The files
under discussion was created early in 1995. As Bernie suggests, if
DJGPP wasn't consider stable or up to date at the time, it could
explain why the author preferred MS C over DJGPP. This sounds
plausible to me, even more so given the authors choice not to
distribute the DJGPP executables (only source). Bernie also
suggested a plausible explanation for why the executables differed in
file size between the two distributions. In short: If the author used
MS C, larger (more bloated) executables should be expected.
Even if we can't say for sure why the author preferred the one
over the other, my curiosity about the differences between
the two distributions is now satisfied, partly so also since I
will be moving on to a different/later(1997) version of csplit, as
recommended by Howard.

I believe I DO know what *compiling* means. I also believe I know
DMPI, VCPI,XMS, DMPS - and few other acronyms. But thanks anyway
Howard, for the files and suggestions, and sorry if my
questions lead you astray. Thanks also goes to Bernie for satisfying
my initial curiosity.
Now I will make like a banana and (c)split! ;-)
All the best,
Bjorn
