Thanks again for the advice some of you sent me a while ago! I consider
those messages a valuable reference still:
For those who don't know, I edit and host Life-Net News & Radio, a
no-profit, no-proceeds effort against poverty where the audience takes
control. Even after starting the radio show, we didn't see loud results
until we got e-mail last August, from our county library. The library was
the only server I found that would provide to a 2400-baud modem on a
computer 12 or so years old with one meg RAM, monochrome display, no WWW,
no Windows.
A few months ago the library notified everyone that they would be
terminating their e-mail service, period. I had 'til August to find
another solution. Given my parameters, do you suppose I found any
alternative? I guess I might have, but first I called the library:
Previously, they had said there are plenty of free Web-based e-mail
services out there. I said I had no WWW. They recommended Juno. But
after looking at Juno Basic, I found even their entry bar too high. WHERE
can an old saw like mine get e-mail? I pressed upon them. I didn't give
up until the guy mentioned that the library was making a few exceptions to
the cutoffs. So I wrote the [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Man, with a true survivor PC like MINE you gotta IMPRESS it on these
people!--I laid out my old-puter parameters. I sent him/her a sample of
my Life-Net work. I suggested s/he look at my entry in the library's own
Community Resources Directory under Life-Net... we do good work, yah-dah,
yah-dah, ...
YES! They granted us an extension to May 2000! (I'm definitely keeping
those advice messages I got.) Now let's see if they do some digging about
how to support survivor PCs!
