After testing all of the above-suggested programs, I found none that either
worked with my Sound Blaster Pro card or that offered true *recording*
features with a microphone. Some of these programs were only source code,
and I'm not able to compile them for my needs.

The recorder program mentioned by Mr. Goldenberg only works for the SB16,
not my Sound Blaster Pro card.

I suspect that there's a lot of work involved with this type of software
that's not freely available like other types of programs -- especially for
the dwindling DOS market. There doesn't seem to be an actual problem with
using DOS for multimedia, like recording wav files with a microphone,
there's just too much competition with Windows these days. A few Sound
Blaster card versions have such utilities written for them through the
manufacturers, and some don't. Unluckily, my Sound Blaster Pro card doesn't
have this type of DOS support. :(

I've found that I can duplicate just about anything done with Windows (some
times more satisfactorily!) with the DOS environment -- except for this one
function. And in this latter instance, it's just a matter of neglect, not
impossibility.
