Thanks for the insight into another (PC) OS lists ramblings about MS &
Windows.
The only comment that really made me laugh was:
> Microsoft's planned obsolescence is just plain morally wrong.
I have worked on mechanical and electrical technology since 1951 (9
years old). And only in the PC computer industry has the idea of a
"moral obligation" required by a manufacturer to make their new products
work with older parts been put forward just because someone is trying to
keep an old clunker working.
I have a friend who is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and owns a
foundry where he creates Model T era racing engine from molten metal. I
once asked him about the computer industry's view on so-called legacy
systems; he thought it was a very naive idea and that a few of the
legacy computer advocates should look at other 19th & 20th century
technology - "if they want to keep that stuff running they should be
willing to build it from scratch themselves, most often without any
information other than there is a broken whatsmacallit that needs
fixing"...
