I think your analogy is good as far as it goes, but, it is incomplete. I
think it applies to computer hardware, but software (OS's and apps) are a
little different. Nobody expects a car or any part of it to last forever or
even to be supported by the manufacturer, however if they resurface the road
to your house and you then learn that your car or it's tires are incompatible
with it, I think you would be just a little distressed to have to purchase
new tires or even a new car to continue to use the roads that were perfectly
fine before they resurfaced it. Of course this is not a perfect analogy
either, but I think it expresses my feelings. I also do not think this is a
"moral obligation", but it sure affects how I feel about the companies that
practice this kind of planned obsolescence.
