Whatever you do, do NOT put whatever software you end up
trying for this onto the harddrive of the XT until you've
tried the recovery and either succeeded or given up.
Adding anything to the drive you want to work on puts the
deleted file at risk of becoming gone for ever.

Instead, bring the undelete application into the XT on a
floppy, and run it from there.

If you really really need this file and none of the apps you
try work, I recommend "zapit" (on simtelnet) as an easy to
use hex editor (of sorts) that will also let you look
directly at your disk.  You'll need to know something about
how DOS marks files as deleted, and how to read a FAT table
(with any luck you'll have defragged recently and be able to
skip that one :))
