Possible disk crashes are one reason I always keep copies of the boot
record, partitition table and FAT. How does not keep up with the fat?
I make a fresh copy each time I boot and put the copy on a second hard
disk I have in my 486, which I use for semi-secure backups. That way,
I can find most of my files if the primary FATs get mangled.

Incidently, if your only problem is the boot record -- why not make
one of the other partitions the primary one that you boot from and
see if the file system on the problem disk is OK?
