A few months ago I was given a NEC MultiSpeed (PC-16-01) laptop. In fact, I
am composing this message on it while my main computer is formatting a tape.
I have had no problems with it, but am wondering if there are more or better
things I could do with it. I have checked Usenet (including Deja.Com) and
found previous little about this model. There does not appear to be a
comp.sys.nec where I could post a query. I found nothing on the NEC site
about it, so I'm sorta stuck. So I'm posting my plea to the SURVPC list and
to comp.sys.ibm.pc.classic in hopes that there's someone here that knows
something about these beasties. (Naturally, the folks that gave it to me had
long since lost the manual.)
Here are some things I'm wondering about;
1) On the back of the unit there is a set of four config (DIP) switches.
What do they do?
2) On the back of the unit there is a port the size of a game port labeled
"EXT FDC" which I assume means "EXTernal Floppy Disk Controller". Anybody
know the pinouts so I could hook it to an external drive?
3) On the bottom of the unit there is a panel which slides open; underneath
it are four large chips which are soldered in, plus two sockets. No idea
what these are for.
If somebody knows what these are or knows where I might get a manual for
this thing, I'd sure appreciate it. Or better yet, where at NEC someone may
still know something about them. It's a handy little gizmo, I just hate to
see it not be used to its fullest.
Thanks!
