Linux is easy to configure - if you know how. That's the great advantage
and the biggest disadvantage to it (unlike Windows where very little can be
changed but it's easy to do so) if you ask me. DOS is cryptic (for
newcommers) as well, but it's not hard to add/remove something from getting
loaded when you start the computer with just a little knowledge. Not to
forget that you can't access the hardware directly which slows it down.
And, how can you expect users to learn to "umount" a floppy after thay have
finished using it? The normal way is to save whatever they have done and
then remove it. Also, saving files when there's no "quota" left doesn't
give you an error (that happened to two classmates today, luckily they had
an old copy so they'll probably be able to get everything ready for
tommorow anyway).
And the cryptic way programs are installed - granted I'm only using Linux
at university - but it's not just unpacking the program to a new directory
and then it's finished (like in DOS). And instead of an installation
program (DOS and Windows) there's some script which the user needs to
change (and/or hack his/her way in as root) and that doesn't make it easy
for the user(s).
Unfortunately I wasn't able to boot from a floppy in school so I'm condemed
to Linux there :(
(Or can I read the BIOS password in Linux and/or NT? They are both rather
strict about things like that.)
