Always an excellent source. For text/programmer's editors, you can take
your pick according too your needs or preference. As far as a word
processor though, I've spent a week straight looking for a good one.
I've tried many, and the best is VDE, which can be found here. More
updated versions are at http://www.punky.com/vde/vdefiles.htm . Also
there are many utilities for VDE and an older version suitable for older
PCs, which would run from floppy on an XT. A real advantage if you have
a mix of equipment.
VDE can be used either by WordStar like control keys or configurable
pull-down menus. The control key method would eliminate language
difference problems, while the menu system provides one option for a
user-defined menu; you would write these menu labels in Portuguese, of
course.
It's shareware, but registration is not mandatory. The unregistered
version does not include the spelling dictionary, but you're probably
not after an Engligh spell checker, anyway. Source code is not
published. I've not contacted the author, but my guess is that he'd
supply the source in exchange for a Portuguese version being out there
somewhere. Be aware that this is x86 assembly, not C.
As I've said, this is my recommendation only for a word processor. For
program editing, the ...\editor directory at Simtel has choices better
suited to that.
